My sister raised me. I used to call her a nobody. Then I discovered the truth that changed everything.

As a young man, I focused on my studies. She focused on surviving. While I immersed myself in textbooks, she learned to negotiate bills, deal with landlords, and stretch her salary until it almost vanished. I rarely saw her rest. When she did, she insisted she was just tired, nothing more.

I believed him. Or perhaps I wanted to believe him.

The years flew by. I did well in school. Very well. The teachers praised me. The counselors encouraged me. Everyone said I had a bright future. The college acceptance letters arrived. Then, the medical school acceptance. Then, the residency acceptance. Each achievement seemed like proof that my sacrifices were paying off.

At my graduation, wrapped in a stiff gown, with applause echoing around me, I searched through the crowd until I found her. She was sitting in the back, clapping softly, her eyes shining with pride.

When he hugged me afterwards, something ugly surfaced inside me. A kind of arrogance that I didn't recognize at the time.

I laughed, euphoric at my achievement, and said words that would later haunt me.

"See? I climbed the ladder. You took the easy way out and became a nobody."

The phrase fell upon us like something fragile that breaks.

For a moment, I thought she would finally break down. But she didn't. She smiled, a weak, tired smile, and said, "I'm proud of you."

Then he left.

We didn't speak for three months.
