When I arrived at my sister's family dinner with my 6-year-old daughter, my mother came out and said quietly, "You weren't supposed to come tonight." So we left in the car. But 9 minutes later, my father called, furious, and told me to leave.

I arrived at my parents' driveway at 5:52 p.m., with my six-year-old daughter, Lily, humming in the back seat as she tapped the heel of one of her shiny shoes against the car seat. My mother's porch light was already on, though the April afternoon still held some light, and through the front window I could see movement in the dining room: people carrying plates, my sister's husband uncorking a bottle of wine, my teenage nephew laughing uproariously at something on his phone.

It was supposed to be a simple Sunday family dinner in Naperville, just outside Chicago. My sister Melissa had texted me two days earlier: “Come over Sunday at six. Mom’s roasting chicken.” No smiley face, no extra affection, but that was typical of her. Since my divorce a year ago, Melissa’s affection had been minimal. Still, Lily had spent half the day drawing for Grandpa Robert, and I’d baked the lemon bars my dad loved so much.

I had barely unbuckled Lily's seatbelt when the front door opened and my mother, Diane, stepped out, gently closing it behind her.

That alone made my stomach turn.

He crossed the porch with his arms crossed over his chest, without looking at Lily first as he always did. His gaze fell on me with a blank, almost irritated expression.

"You weren't supposed to come tonight," he said.

For a moment I thought I'd misheard. —Melissa invited me.

"I shouldn't have done it," my mother replied. "Tonight is for close family."

I stared at her. —I'm from the immediate family.

She pressed her lips together. "Don't complicate things more than necessary."

Behind me, Lily's little voice came from the open car door. "Mom? Shall we get in?"
