In another clip, Daniel was in the kitchen with a woman I vaguely recognized from family events—Olivia, a distant cousin by marriage. He was having sex with her. Not roughly. Not ambiguously. He had one hand around her waist and the other pouring whiskey as if this were his home, his future, his already assured victory. Then I heard my own name. "She's useful," Daniel said. "Rachel makes money, keeps things respectable, and doesn't ask enough questions. Once Granny's gone, I'll let her go." "Leave. She's basically an ATM with a wedding ring." Olivia laughed. "And the will?" Daniel leaned forward and lowered his voice, but the audio captured every word.
"If the old woman doesn't pass away naturally soon, we can help things along. Mom has already made efforts to save money and medication. No one is going to investigate a second stroke." I felt something inside me turn icy. Margaret was looking at my face, not the screen. "There's more," she said quietly. "Much more. And when you see all of this, you'll understand why I need you to remain calm." I glanced at the screen as another file opened, and in that moment, I realized I hadn't lived in a bad marriage.
