US Central Command, known as CENTCOM, announced on Friday that the military action was a “strong response to yesterday’s attack,” according to Al Jazeera.

CENTCOM, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East,  said in a statement that “U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone sites, as well as coastal radar installations.”

In the same statement, the American institution also said: “Iran’s dangerous behavior undermines freedom of navigation at a time when more and more international trade transits this vital trade corridor.”

Shortly after the US announcement, strikes were reported near the port of Sirik in southern Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as the IRGC, later said it had responded by attacking US military targets in the region.

In a statement carried by the official IRNA agency, the IRGC warned: “In the event of new acts of aggression, our response will be more extensive than this.”

This new exchange of attacks calls into question the agreement signed on June 17 between the United States and Iran. The document included a ceasefire, but now the two sides accuse each other of not respecting the agreement.

Through that memorandum, the two countries committed to a “permanent” halt to “military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.” As a result of this document, the conflict that began on February 28th between the United States and Israel against Iran was suspended. However,

the agreement was not final. The memorandum was only a step before broader discussions, including on the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. This route is very important for world trade.

Since the beginning of the war, Iran has blocked traffic through the strait, and the effects were quickly seen in the prices of fuel, fertilizers, and other products, which increased sharply.

Tensions have returned after Thursday’s attack on the Singapore-registered merchant ship Ever Lovely.

The incident has again led to accusations between Washington and Tehran.

Donald Trump said on Friday that the attack on the Ever Lovely was a “violation” of the memorandum.

The agreement provided for a 60-day period during which Iran was to make “best efforts” to allow commercial ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz free of charge.

In practice, the truce was difficult to maintain.

Israel continued its bombing of Lebanon, which was considered a violation of the provisions of the memorandum.

In response to these attacks, Iran announced last week that it would close the Strait of Hormuz again.
